2017 European Language Industry survey report now available here!

BQTA - CBTI/BKVT Public Tendering Vademecum

In many European countries public tendering of translation and interpreting services is in the center of controversy. In order to help the authors of tender specifications minimise the risk of unsuccessful tendering, BQTA and the Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters have decided to create a document that explains in a clear and concise way how the authors can create specifications that take into account the professional characteristics of these activities. This cooperation of two associations, that are often considered to represent contradictory interests, is unique for the industry, and demonstrates the importance of public tenders for translation companies and individual language professionals alike. Download the Vademecum here

2017 European Language Industry survey report

The report will be made public as of early May, after the EUATC T-Update conference in Berlin on April 20th-21st where the BQTA president will present the results in detail. Over 860 stakeholders expressed their opinions and concerns.

As a sneak preview BQTA members can already access the report in the members area of the BQTA or EUATC websites. Spoiler Alert: in general, the industry shows more optimism than in 2016.

2017 edition of European Language Industry Survey

The industry survey, a joint initiative of EUATC, Elia, GALA, the EMT university network and the Lind group of the EC Directorate General Translation to gather trend information and probe the sentiment of the market, is now also supported by the international translators federation FIT Europe. With their contribution, the survey extends its scope to the important segment of individual language professionals. The survey form is available until February 20th at https://goo.gl/forms/TXJTMklBbn7aohcU2. The results will be published end March and presented at various national and international events.

Data Translations has a new name: Ubiqus Belgium

Back in 2012, Data Translations joined the international Ubiqus Group, becoming its Belgian arm. And now, after a gradual 4-year integration process during which it made the most of the synergies and logistics of the Group, it seemed only logical to adopt the Group’s name and from now on operate under the name Ubiqus Belgium. The team remains the same, as do the company's approach to service and philosophy.

The first BQTA Job Fair was an unexpected success, not just judging by the number of participants, but also by the level of satisfaction expressed by both the participating students and the translation companies. The focus on a very specific segment of students and companies created a level of instant matching (see some pictures left and right) that  cannot be reached in large scale job events. Several agencies were surprised to notice the differences in industry knowledge between students of different universities, and suggested that BQTA would take an initiative to help level out those differences. We were also surprised by the success of the CV evaluation sessions. Clearly an item for which we need to provide more capacity in the next edition.

The analysis of the 2016 European Language Industry Survey was completed by end March, as scheduled. Initial and partial results of this joint initiative of EUATC, Elia and GALA, which was run with the support of the Directorate-General Translation of the European Commission, had already been discussed at the Brussels Translating Europe workshop on internships, on March 18th. The full analysis was presented at the EUATC T-Update conference in Budapest. One conclusion among many: the average European translation company is still mildly optimistic, but more realistic expectations replace the slight euphoria that could be read from the 2015 results. The complete report can be downloaded here.

New e-book on Quality in Translation. BQTA member SDL has published a new e-book on quality in translation, with the co-operation of the other BQTA member Idest. You are invited to discover it here.

The 2016 Language Industry Survey is closed. 445 answers were received, which is twice as many as in previous editions. The results will be available on this website and on the website of Elia, EUATC, Gala and Lind after 31 March 2016. They will also be discussed at a number of national and international events.

2016 Language Industry Survey - Trends, Expectations and Challenges in the european translation industry

This survey, which is a collaborative effort of Elia, EMT, EUATC, GALA and LIND, is largely based on the EUATC survey that has run for three years, with contributions of Elia and Lind to cover additional subjects such as training, recruitment and technology.

The survey is accessible at http://goo.gl/forms/KgrjlkVqcq and will remain open until Friday 12th February 2016. The survey is completely anonymous.

The results will be made available on the websites of the participating associations as of 31st March. They will also be presented and discussed at various events, such as EUATC's T-Update conference in Budapest on 21-22 April.

BQTA 20 Year Anniversary Round Table - on November 20th, BQTA invited its members to a Round Table meeting to discuss challenges to profitability and solutions that individual members had developed to meet them. Discussion centered around topics such as productivity measurement, offshoring and the precarious balance between automation and human interaction. We thank all those who participated in the discussion, including the representatives of the Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters. The presentations are available in the Members Area.
